The lighting of a Memorial Candle not only provides a gesture of sympathy and support to the immediate family during their time of need but also provides the gift of extending the Book of Memories for future generations.
Herbert Lee “Poon” Small a native of Wilcox County, Alabama and a longtime resident of Mobile, Alabama was born March 23, 1931 to the late Sam and Lucille Myles Small in Boykin (Gee’s Bend) Alabama. He transitioned from his earthly home to his eternal home on Friday, May 4, 2018 at his residence.
At the age of 16 Herbert relocated to Mobile, Alabama and gained employment with the Alabama State Docks Local 1410, where he retired after 36 years of dedicated service.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years; Irene Etheridge Small, two sisters; Catherine Turner and Essie Toval and two brothers; C’archer Small, Sr. and Samuel Lee Small.
He leaves to cherish his memories nine children; Herbert Wayne Small, Karen Small, Lakeitha Small and Carlos Small, all of Mobile, Alabama, Harriet (Donald) Howell, Panama City, Florida, Sharee Small, Birmingham, Alabama, Jacqueline (Anthony) Williams and Catherine Rogers, both of Mobile, Alabama and Angela Johnson, Axis, Alabama. He also leaves to cherish his memories nine grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, one sister, Rennie Small; Brooklyn, New York, three brothers; Sylvester Small and Earnest Small both of Mobile, Alabama and Warren (Catherine) Small, Brooklyn, New York, two sisters-in-law; Irene Johnson Small , Mobile, Alabama and Lucy Pettway, Montgomery, Alabama; one brother-in-law; Calvin (Judy) Etheridge, Huntsville, Alabama and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
His remains will lie in state at Small's Mortuary, Mobile Friday, May 11, 2018 from 1 until 8 pm . Family will receive family and friends from 6 until 7 pm and Saturday, May 12, 2018 after 10 am until the 12 noon funeral hour at Mt. Sinai Missionary Baptist Church, 860 S.
