EDWARD JAMES MITCHELL, SR.

February 9, 1918 - March 5, 2013

Mr. Edward James Mitchell, Sr. 95, passed away at his home on March 5, 2013. He was a native of Mobile, Alabama, born February 9, 1918. He was a faithful member of The Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd where he served proudly as a former Vestry member. Mr. Mitchell was preceded in death by his parents Mabel Paige Dazmore and James Edward Mitchell and son, Edward James Mitchell, Jr. Mr. Mitchell served in the United States Marine Corps during World War II as a member of the first Montfort Pointe Marines. He received the highest civilian Congressional Gold Medal of Honor in 2012 presented by the Montfort Marine Association Inc. Mobile Chapter #33. He graduated from Dunbar High School and attended Spaulding Business College. He retired from Scott Paper in 1983 after 34 years of service as a supervisor. He is a past member of The Strikers Unlimited Social Club. He is survived by a loving and devoted wife of 71 glorious years, Clarissa (Teal) Mitchell; four daughters, Annie Louise (Joe) Cothron, Constance Allen (main caregiver), Yolanda (Rehofus) Esters and Laura Thomas; one son, Darrell Mitchell, all of Mobile and one daughter-in-law, Regina Mitchell of Decatur, Alabama; eighteen grandchildren; twenty-eight great grandchildren; four great- great grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, other family members and friends, two devoted friends, Frank Cooper and classmate, Walter Samples. His remains will lie in state at Small's Mortuary, Mobile, on March 8, 2013 from 1:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. and after 9:00 a.m. on March 9, 2013 until the 11:00 a.m. funeral hour at The Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd, 605 Donald Street Mobile, Alabama. Interment will follow in Gethsemane Cemetery, Mobile, Alabama. DIGNIFIED AND PROFESSIONAL SERVICES ENTRUSTED TO SMALL'S MORTUARY, 950 S. BROAD STREET, MOBILE, ALABAMA.
